John Cyrus to Join the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Faculty |
Liaison Librarian, John Cyrus, has accepted a position with the health sciences library at VCU. John came to LSU Health Shreveport in 2009 after graduating from LSU Baton Rouge?s School of Library and Information Science.? In addition to serving as the Health Sciences Library?s liaison librarian, John taught extensively, published several papers and posters, and launched the Writing Consultants service in 2010. Effective November 16, 2012, John will be heading to VCU for an exciting new chapter in his career. Congratulations to John; we wish him all the best!

Library Staff Member Recognized for Excellence |
Congratulations to Nell Hays, Administrative Coordinator in the Library, who was recently selected as a winner of the 2012 LSU Health Shreveport Employee Excellence Awards.? She was selected by the LSU Health Shreveport Foundation, the sponsor of the award, based on nominations received from her co-workers.? She will receive the award, along with a check for $250, at a banquet on October 23.?Ms. Hays has worked at LSU Health Shreveport since 1980, and she has served in the Library since 2000.? She always exemplifies excellence, and we are proud that she has been recognized by the Foundation with this special award.

Librarian to Edit Journal Column |
Congratulations to Kim Pullen, Head of the Library Liaison Program, who was recently appointed co-editor of the ?Informatics Education? column in the journal Medical Reference Services Quarterly. She will begin her duties with the 2013 issues.?Medical Reference Services Quarterly?is a peer-reviewed journal for librarians who provide reference and public services to health sciences personnel in clinical, educational, or research settings.

Librarian Coordinates History Project |
Dee Jones, Head of Cataloging, recently coordinated a retrospective indexing project for the Medical Library Association. New indexes were prepared for thirty-seven of the organization?s oral histories that lacked adequate indexing. These new indexes will facilitate the use of these oral histories for research purposes. The Medical Library Association?s membership includes more than 3600 individual members in the health sciences information field. The oral histories are available to members at the organization?s website. In addition to her cataloging responsibilities, Mrs. Jones also maintains LSU Health Shreveport?s Archives and History of Medicine Collection.

Librarian Addresses Canadian Meeting |
Dixie Jones, Library Director, recently spoke at the annual meeting of the Upstate New York and Ontario Chapter of the Medical Library Association (MLA).? This conference was held in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.? Mrs. Jones, who currently serves as President-elect of MLA, presented the ?MLA Update? during a general session of the conference.

Congratulations to Talicia Tarver, Digital & Information Services Librarian. She was recently elected Secretary of the Health Sciences Library Association of Louisiana.? This organization includes librarians from health science institutions throughout the state.

Librarians Evaluate Health Education Resources for Children |
Congratulations to Deidra Woodson, Metadata and Digitization Librarian; Dee Jones, Head Cataloging Librarian; and Donna Timm, Head of User Education, whose article?Playing Online Interactive Games for Health Education:?Evaluating Their Effectiveness was recently published. The article, which appears in the current issue of?Journal of Hospital Librarianship,?details the process through which online games with a health education focus were selected for the children?s section of the Library?s consumer health database?healthelinks.?Healthcare professionals are encouraged to recommend?healthelinks?to their patients as a source of accurate and easy-to-understand health information.

Librarians Receive Service Awards |
Congratulations to David Duggar, Reference Librarian, and Montie? Dobbins, Head of User Access Services, who were recently recognized for their milestone years of service to LSU Health Shreveport. Mrs. Dobbins received her ten-year pin in an afternoon ceremony in the BRI Atrium on October 23rd. Mr. Duggar was honored for twenty years of service at a dinner held at East Ridge Country Club, also on October 23rd.

In addition,?Dixie Jones, who is a member of the SCC Credentialing committee, helped to facilitate a roundtable discussion, ?Academy of Health Information Professionals: Can I Join Too??? In her role as Chair of the SCC Membership Committee,?Deidra Woodson?coordinated and moderated the New Members Reception.? Although unable to attend the meeting,?Kimberly Pullen?served as Fundraising Committee Chair and coordinated the Committee?s activities at the meeting.
The South Central Chapter includes health sciences librarians from Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.? This year?s conference was held in Lubbock, Texas.
