    Sexism In Science

An anonymous reader writes with news of a recent paper about the bias among science faculty against female students. The study, recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, asked professors to evaluate applications for a lab manager position. The faculty were given information about fictional applicants with randomly-assigned genders. They tended to rate male applicants as more hire-able than female applicants, and male names also generated higher starting salary and more mentoring offers. This bias was found in both male and female faculty. "The average salary suggested by male scientists for the male student was $30,520; for the female student, it was $27,111. Female scientists recommended, on average, a salary of $29,333 for the male student and $25,000 for the female student."

Electoral College math: Not all votes are equal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When it comes to electing the president, not all votes are created equal. And chances are yours will count less than those of a select few.

For example, the vote of Dave Smith in Sheridan, Wyo., counts almost 3 1/2 times as much mathematically as those of his wife's aunts in northeastern Ohio.

    Why? Electoral College math.

A statistical analysis of the state-by-state voting-eligible population by The Associated Press shows that Wyoming has 139,000 eligible voters ? those 18 and over, U.S. citizens and non-felons ? for every presidential elector chosen in the state. In Ohio, it's almost 476,000 per elector, and it's nearly 478,000 in neighboring Pennsylvania.

But there's mathematical weight and then there's the reality of political power in a system where the president is decided not by the national popular vote but by an 18th century political compromise: the Electoral College.

Smith figures his vote in solid Republican Wyoming really doesn't count that much because it's a sure Mitt Romney state. The same could be said for ballots cast in solid Democratic states like New York or Vermont. In Ohio, one of the biggest battleground states, Smith's relatives are bombarded with political ads. In Wyoming, Smith says, "the candidates don't care about my vote because we only see election commercials from out-of-state TV stations."

The nine battleground states where Romney and Barack Obama are spending a lot of time and money ? Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin ? have 44.1 million people eligible to vote. That's only 20.7 percent of the nation's 212.6 million eligible voters. So nearly 4 of 5 eligible voters are pretty much being ignored by the two campaigns.

When you combine voter-to-elector comparisons and battleground state populations, there are clear winners and losers in the upcoming election.

More than half the nation's eligible voters live in states that are losers in both categories. Their states are not closely contested and have above-average ratios of voters to electors. This is true for people in 14 states with 51 percent of the nation's eligible voters: California, New York, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Indiana, Tennessee, Missouri, Maryland, Louisiana and Kentucky. Their votes count the least.

The biggest winners in the system, those whose votes count the most, live in just four states: Colorado, New Hampshire, Iowa and Nevada. They have low voter-to-elector ratios and are in battleground states. Only 4 percent of the nation's eligible voters ? 1 in 25 ? live in those states.

It's all dictated by the U.S. Constitution, which set up the Electoral College. The number of electors each state gets depends on the size of its congressional delegation. Even the least populated states ? like Wyoming ? get a minimum of three, meaning more crowded states get less proportionally.

If the nation's Electoral College votes were apportioned in a strict one-person, one-vote manner, each state would get one elector for every 395,000 eligible voters. Some 156 million voters live in the 20 states that have a larger ratio than that average: That's 73 percent ? nearly 3 out of 4.

And for most people, it's even more unrepresentative. About 58 percent of the nation's eligible voting population lives in states with voter-to-elector ratios three times as large as Wyoming's. In other words, Dave Smith's voting power is about equal to three of his wife's aunts and uncles in Ohio, and most people in the nation are on the aunt-and-uncle side of that unbalanced equation.

"It's a terrible system; it's the most undemocratic way of electing a chief executive in the world, " said Paul Finkelman, a law professor at Albany Law School who teaches this year at Duke University. "There's no other electoral system in the world where the person with the most votes doesn't win."

The statistical analysis uses voter eligibility figures for 2010 calculated by political science professor Michael McDonald at George Mason University. McDonald is a leader in the field of voter turnout.

Former Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming defends the Electoral College system for protecting small states in elections, which otherwise might be overrun by big city campaigning: "Once you get rid of the Electoral College, the election will be conducted in New York and San Francisco."

Sure it gives small states more power, but at what price? asks Douglas Amy, a political science professor at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts: "This clearly violates that basic democratic principle of one person, one vote. Indeed, many constitutional scholars point out that this unfair arrangement would almost certainly be declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court on those grounds if it were not actually in the Constitution."

Article 2 of the Constitution says presidents are voted on by electors (it doesn't mention the word college) with each state having a number equal to its U.S. senators and representatives. While representatives are allocated among the states proportional by population, senators are not. Every state gets two. So Wyoming has 0.2 percent of the nation's voting-eligible population but almost 0.6 percent of the Electoral College. And since the number of electors is limited to 538, some states get less proportionately.

Adding to this, most states have an all-or-nothing approach to the Electoral College. A candidate can win a state by just a handful of votes but get all the electors. That happened in 2000, when George W. Bush, after much dispute, won Florida by 537 votes out of about 6 million and got all 27 electoral votes. He won the presidential election but lost the national popular vote that year.

That election led some states to sign a compact promising to give their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner. But that compact would go into effect only if and when states with the 270 majority of electoral votes signed on. So far nine states with 132 electoral votes have signed, all predominantly Democratic states.

Because of the 2000 election, conservatives and Republicans tend to feel that changing the Electoral College would hurt them, George Mason's McDonald said, and after their big victories in 2010, the popular vote compact movement stalled. But that analysis may not necessarily be true, he added. McDonald said before recent opinion polls started to break for Obama there seemed to be a possibility that he could win the electoral vote and lose the popular vote because of weak turnout ? but still enough to win ? in traditionally Democratic states like New York and California.

Former Stanford University computer scientist John Koza, who heads National Popular Vote, which is behind the electoral reform compact, said Democrat John Kerry would have won the Electoral College in 2004 while Republican Bush won the popular vote, if only 60,000 Bush votes in Ohio had changed to Kerry votes.

History shows that candidates have won the presidency but not the popular vote four times, and in each case it was the Democrat who got the most votes but lost the presidency: 1824, 1876, 1888 and 2000.

The Associated Press analysis suggests that in this year's election, the current system seems to benefit Romney. The AP re-apportioned electoral votes based on voting-eligible population and not congressional delegations, so that, for example, Wyoming and the District of Columbia would have only one elector instead of three, and California would have 58 instead of 55.

Based on polling, states strongly in the Romney camp have 191 electoral votes in the current system but would have only 178 if the electoral votes were allocated based on voting-eligible population. Based on similar polling, Obama would benefit by about five electoral votes if electors were apportioned by that population. The nine battleground states would gain even more sway, jumping from 110 electoral votes to 118.

That would compound the perceived problem of a shrinking number of battleground states being all that mattered in the election, leaving the overwhelming majority of states standing around as "spectator states," Koza said.

John McGinnis, a professor of constitutional law at Northwestern University, defends the current Electoral College, arguing that while the mathematics of electoral proportionate calculations is correct, the conclusion that it over-represents small states is not. Larger states still have more sway because they have more electoral votes, he said.

Further, the historical agreement to give each state two senators regardless of their population and to base electoral votes on congressional delegation rather than population "was an essential compromise" when framers were drafting the Constitution, McGinnis said. Without that compromise, there might not have been a Constitution or nation, he said.

But Finkelman said his reading of history is that the compromise wasn't about power between small and large states as much as it was about power of slave-holding states. He said James Madison wanted direct popular election of the president, but because African-American slaves wouldn't count, that would give more power to the North. So the framers came up with a compromise to count each slave as three-fifths of a person for representation in Congress and presidential elections, he said.

30 years ago, the CD started the digital music revolution

    11 hrs.

The digital music revolution officially hit 30 years ago, on Oct. 1, 1982. While you may be surprised to learn?that the heralds of the coming age were, in fact, the Bee Gees, it probably comes as less of a shock to learn that Sony was at the very heart of it. After years of?research and an?intense period of?collaboration with Philips, Sony shipped the world's first CD player, the CDP-101. Music???and how we listen to it???would never be the same.

Today the CD player might be seen as something of a relic, since our smartphones, iPods and satellite radios provide seamless access to not only our entire music libraries, but to nearly every artist or track available. We can dictate any song or album to an app and have it playing in seconds, or download a new single by visiting an artist's Facebook page.

In such a world, the idea of carrying around a disc loaded with just 10 or 12 tracks and switching it out every hour sounds positively stone-age.?But the MP3 and streaming media are not just the CD's replacements, but its descendants. The future of music in fact made its unofficial debut, believe it or not, in the hands of the Bee Gees.

It was on the BBC show Tomorrow's World in 1981?that the Bee Gees publicly?demonstrated CD technology (and a new album, Living Eyes) for the first time. Artists were excited about the format ? the prospect of a high-quality, track-separated, non-degrading medium was enticing, though many were still skeptical of digital encoding. But music industry heavies like David Bowie and renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan were quick to embrace it, and soon the likes of Dire Straits would hit a million sales and cement the CD's position?as the new standard for music.

That triumph was a long time coming: development of the format began in the '70s, when both Sony and Philips were independently doing research on an digital,?optical disc format to replace cassette tapes and records. Early work at Sony was led by Norio Ohga, who bravely bore the skepticism of his comrades in order to create and demonstrate the earliest versions in 1976 and 1978.

Meanwhile, Philips was on the same track, so to speak. Their original version, an evolution of the laserdisc, was a whopping 20cm in diameter, but after reflection they brought the size of their prototype down to 11.5cm ? the same size, measured diagonally, as a cassette tape.

In 1979, the two companies decided to work together. They set up a task force of less than a dozen people ? engineers who didn't know if they could trust each other. After breaking the ice, however, the team worked for a year and?managed to arrive at a set of standards, called the "Red Book." The manufacturing process and method of encoding were contributed by Philips, while Sony created the digital error-correction that made reading the data reliable.

The new technology was privately inaugurated in 1980, and the first modern CD pressed was Richard Strauss's "Alpine Symphony." The next year, the Bee Gees went on the BBC, and the year after that the CD as we know it today was born.

That October of 1982, the CDP-101 made its debut in Japan alongside the first run of CD albums, led by Billy Joel's 52nd Street. The device was expensive: ?168,000, ?about $730 at the time, or almost twice that when adjusted for inflation. But home audio wasn't cheap then, and there was a market eager to snap up the new, high-fidelity audio format.

The engineers behind it?had really had a task: everything about the system was brand new. As Jacques Heemskerk, one of the senior Philips engineers on the project, told the BBC in 2007:

It was revolutionary in many fields???the optics were new, the disc was new. At the start of development there wasn't even a laser that would work well enough for our needs.?The most advanced laser at the time had a lifespan of only 100 hours.

So the cost was justified by the complexity and novelty of the hardware. Other manufacturers, like Toshiba, Kenwood, and of course Philips, would produce variant CD players over the course of the next year.?

The first CDs to market, with the notable exception of Billy Joel, were mostly classical. In fact, the capacity of the CD was raised during development from 60 to 74 minutes in order to accommodate Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The creators of the format knew that classical music lovers were more likely to appreciate (and more likely?to pay for) the increased quality of the CD system.?

The pop and rock market, however, was still in love with cassettes, which were more portable and more ubiquitous than ever. 1979 had brought the first Walkman, and cassette players were now standard equipment in car radios. The CD was, for the moment, strictly for the home, where your nice speakers and amp would make the improved fidelity sing. Even there, to this day, some audiophiles swear by vinyl records and an all-analog setup.

It wasn't until later in the '80s that things really took off. Dire Straits'?Brothers In Arms?sold a million CDs in 1985, suggesting that the format had finally hit its stride. It wasn't long before other artists were selling millions upon millions of their albums in CD format. The Discman, introduced in 1984, and the CD-ROM format, enabling computers to read the discs, further accelerated uptake.

The rest, as they say, is history. Since that time, hundreds of billions of CDs have been shipped and sold ? the numbers are near-impossible to track, since the easily duplicated?digital data led to an enormous increase in piracy and counterfeiting, not to mention the billions of copies and mix-CDs made by normal users.

Music CDs?peaked in 2000 with global sales estimated?at around 2.5 ?billion. Soon (legal) digital downloads began to replace physical media for many music buyers. Though its numbers are on the decline,?CDs are still produced today on the order of hundreds of millions, and it will be many years yet before the world's CD factories shut their doors.

The size and shape of the CD, as well as its capacity, portability, and versatility, have been a major factor in how music has been developed and consumed for decades. Albums were written to fill it, new formats like the DVD were made in imitation of it, and entire new trends in media resulted from it. The Compact Disc started the digital revolution for music in the '70s, and we're still feeling the effects.

    Kindle Display vs. Chameleon Skin

Kindle with Cephalopodse-Paper display technology in electronic devices reflects and draws upon the ambient light around you to display multiple colors, contrasts and diffusion in communicate text and images. This technology has been evolving over the past couple of decades.

But biological organisms have been evolving color-changing abilities over millions of years. ?From the chameleon and cuttlefish to the octopus and squid, they have developed for adaptive concealment with camouflage and communication signaling display with warning or mating cues. Could we maybe learn something from them? After all, e-Paper devices lag in optical performance, particularly color generation.

That is why a team of researchers has produced a study aimed at helping biologists who work with these color-changing creatures as well as engineers working with e-Paper technology. The paper, titled ?Biological vs. Electronic Adaptive Coloration: How Can One Inform the Other??, in ?The Journal of The Royal Society Interface?, had three goals, according to Eric Kreit, University of Cincinnati doctoral graduate, ?to allow display engineers to learn from millions of years of natural selection and evolution. To teach biologists the most advanced mechanisms and performance measurements used in human-made reflective e-Paper and to give all scientists a clearer picture of the long-term prospects for capabilities such as adaptive concealment and what can be learned from now you see me, now you don?t mechanisms.?

How Animals and E-Paper are Similar

One of the key findings is that there are various approaches for changing the reflective color of a surface, and that the highest-performance ones developed by both humans and nature share common features. They both use pigments, and they both change or attain color expression by spreading or compacting the pigment. Muscle fiber is used by animals to spread or compact pigment, and electronics use an electric field to.

On the other hand, even if the basic concept for color change is similar, modern technology has never developed anything near the complexity or sophistication of the biology and physics of cephalopod skin. Cephalopods are a varied branch of ocean dwellers and include 700 species of cuttlefish, squid and octopus. They are also the known masters of color change on our planet.

According to Jason Heikenfeld, University of Cincinnati associate professor of electronic and computing systems, ?The highest performance human-made approaches have been only recently developed, well after numerous other approaches were tried.? Perhaps in the past, if we had more closely trusted nature?s ability to find the best solution, we would be further along today in creating better display technology.?

    Biological Mastery of Ambient Light

Biological organisms that change color are highly efficient at using ambient light. Just have a look at the chameleon. Either the animal?s skin reflects light to achieve a bright-color effect, or it absorbs light to achieve stunning, multi-colored effects.

In their use of available light, biological organisms are more efficient than electronic devices, which generally require large amounts of electric power to generate an internal or emissive light to generate bright color.

?Cephalopod skin is exquisitely beautiful and radiant, and can be changed in milliseconds, all without generating any intrinsic light from within the skin; there are elegant solutions from biology waiting to be translated to our consumer and industrial world.? Says Roger T. Hanlon, research scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.

Indeed, overall, animals outperform synthetic devices when it comes to sophistication and integrated systems; required energy use for color change; size scalability (cephalopods? adaptive coloration works over a wide range of sizes in the organisms? class ? from small-size cuttlefish to large-size octopus and squid); and surface texture (cephalopods can selectively adapt or ?crinkle? their skins to match a variety of three-dimensional textures, which provides additional light scattering and shadowing).

Electronics Display Colors Faster and in Wider Ranges

But we?re not completely losing the race. Human-developed technology such as e-Paper and e-Ink is actually far superior to cephalopods or other color-adapting animals in terms of speed. That is to say, human-made electronics can achieve color and a color change faster than the response time of a biological organism.

Not only that, synthetic devices are able to provide a greater range of colors and more efficient dark or black state. A device can achieve a black screen, but most biological organisms cannot achieve such darkened coloring. This is partially due to the fact that an organism such as a marine mammal generally has no reason, in terms of survival adaptation or signaling, to go to a dark or black state. Such an adaptation could even make them more visible, not less, to predators. Nonetheless, there is clearly a lot that engineers can learn from cephalopods and chameleons.

Hooniverse Asks- What's the Next Automotive Purchase You're ...

Remember back a couple of ?years ago when the economy looked like something out of a documentary on North Korea? Yeah, that sucked, and I?ll bet most of you didn?t plan any major durable goods purchases, especially ones that you parked in the garage. But things are looking up for many of us, and perhaps now there?s plenty of pent up demand for replacing that creaky washer and dryer, or maybe adding to the fleet. And if that last part is true for you, we want to know what you?re itching to pull the trigger on.

Truth be told, there are a lot of cars out today ? models that weren?t available even three years ago ? that are like holy balls amazing. Ford?s new Fusion is arguably about the best looking mid-sizer you can buy, and it offers a selection of drivetrain choices that would put 31 Flavors to shame. Not only that, but it seems like now is still a great time to snap up some classic iron, as prices for cars like Ferrari 308s, Triumph TR6s, two-seat T-birds and a bunch of others are just now starting to on the bottom step of the escalator, the perfect opportunity to get in, enjoy, and later make a few bucks.

So what are you planning to do with all that hard-earned cash cluttering up your bank account? Are you going to buy something with wheels? Or maybe you?ve had your eye on something that allows you to work on those wheels, maybe a TIG welder or new air compressor? Let?s not limit this conversation to cars and trucks alone, but be inclusive of all your big ticket garage plans. Of all those possibilities, what?automotive purchase are you next planning to make?

    Apple's?Map apology?dings sterling image

By Martha C. White, NBC News contributor

Someone took a wrong turn in Cupertino.

Acknowledging a rare misstep, Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized Friday for the glitchy Maps app on the new version of iOS. Saying Apple ?fell short,? he said ?We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers? in a letter on the company?s website.?

?Steve Jobs never would have let this happen,? said Gerald C. Meyers, a professor at the University of Michigan's?Stephen M. Ross School of Business. Correct or not, this sentiment is widespread, and it poses a potential problem for?Cook that?s much bigger than an app that invents an airport in Dublin out of thin air.

Tech writers and ordinary users alike tend to expect perfection from Apple, an assumption cultivated under?Jobs? obsessive attention to even the smallest of details. Now, the Maps gaffe shows Apple with a literal as well as a figurative problem with direction, said?Tony Costa, a senior analyst at Forrester Research

"The funny thing people are struggling to understand is, given how apparent the bugs are... how did they let it go out the door in the first place?" Costa said, calling some of the glitches "egregious." The misstep "brings in a whole lot of questions about Apple?s future and management team."

Cook?s apology was the right thing to do, said Meyers, but it came too late. Users started grumbling about the app?s shortcomings pretty much from the moment the new OS and the new iPhone were released.

The company?s mea culpa is only half the solution. The other component is actually fixing Maps. "They?ve still got to fix it, no matter how long it takes," Meyers said. "They should pour resources into getting it done right and getting it done quickly."

Some undecided consumers might defect to or stick with Android, and some iPhone customers with older hardware might delay upgrading to the new OS until the mistakes are sorted out,?but overall, Costa said the Maps problem probably wouldn't have a significant impact on iPhone sales. ?

In an unusual move, Cook recommended that users turn to competitors? map products for now, even including a how-to link for people who wanted to put an icon for Google Maps? web app.?"I think the damage from the Maps rollout has been done and now they?re trying in some sense to repair some of that damage in good faith," Costa said.

Ceding ground to the competition means Apple is forfeiting access to valuable user data, but Meyers said that in terms of repairing its brand image, Apple didn?t have a choice. Encouraging customers to stick with a flawed Maps app would have only reminded them of Apple?s mistake literally at every turn.

Exercise does a body -- and a mind -- good

    Wednesday, September 26, 2012

We've heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it's not just good for physical health ? research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?

A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.

Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity ? such as social relationships and mutual support among team members ? that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.

Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.

The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.

Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.

These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors ? body image and social interaction ? may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.

"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.

Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

Secrets of Traffic Generation ? Ezine Solo Ads ? eZeens | eZeens

    products by Kelvin Lee

This is the number two most effective method of traffic generation for me. An ezine solo ad is a method of traffic generation, the lists on the principle of using other people?s work, you can create your own list.

First, let me explain what an ezine. An ezine is an electronic publication of a magazine, which sent out a particular group of participants at a regular interval. If you placed an ad with an ezine, you?ll get the chance to expose themselves to the list of this ezine and hope that some of them will eventually opt in to your list. There are many ezines in the market and you must have a research focus on the ezines to your niche to do. The more the ezine to your niche targeted leads, generate higher the number of you. Not the number of subscribers needed. Earnings on your ad, because eventually I?ll get better results from a smaller subscriber list ezine ezine as a major participant list You have to place an ad with an ezine and then pursue the conversion and then narrow it down, the best couple of those ezines and then eliminate, not convert well. There are a few types of advertising in an ezine, but I personally recommend you. Solos ads as the primary method of Ezine Advertising What is a solo ads is to use? It is a type of ads that are sent to the entire email list of subscribers and of itself can be unlimited long usually. For this reason, it is usually more expensive, but they usually deliver more results, since the display is all by itself on the entire list of participants. Before. Actually an ad with an ezine, you should assess registration as a participant and then read through their ezine, whether the content is relevant to your niche and what kind of quality is their ezine If you are satisfied with the ezine content and quality, you can see this newsletter and then follow the implementation of your ad. This is one of the most effective method in addition to article marketing, if you do it correctly with proper tracking and understanding. Don't Make These Common Retirement Mistakes - Retirement Homes

Retirement is a time for new beginnings and a clean slate. Baby Boomers have the choice between traveling the world, spending their time volunteering, among countless other retirement ideas.

But some retirement ideas which sound great may cause more difficulty and frustration than they?re worth, and USNews.com recently compiled a list of retirement plans which recent retirees (or soon-to-be retirees) should think twice about before jumping in:

1/ Retiring in an exotic location- While sandy beaches and waterfront villas sound attractive, the biggest problem Boomers might face is a lack of familiarity with the area, and a lack of people they know. In the event there are challenges or problems, friends and family can be helpful, but it?s harder when they are hundreds or even thousands of miles away.

2/ Overestimating travel expenses- As the news source noted, some expenses tend to fall in retirement, such as those related to work and careers, but it?s easy for travel and vacation budgets to balloon out of control, putting a strain on the recently-retired Boomer.

3/ Taking social security early- As noted elsewhere, the earlier you take social security payments, the less money you will receive, so think about whether you really need the money now. If not, it may be a better idea to wait longer and take more money when you might need it more.

Grow Your Business With These Social Media Marketing Tips

Most individuals use social media in at least some part of their day. They are constantly looking at, sharing, and creating new content. This is how Internet content can spread like wildfire. This is excellent because of the speed at which your advertising can reach a huge number of potential customers. If you are the head of a company and want to tap into the wide array of social media outlets for marketing, then you should follow these powerful tips.

Make sure that you enable any following features on your social network of choice. Your customers are likely to already be using social media daily, so leveraging that to remind them of your deals or special offers is effective in keeping them coming back to your site.

Your social media friends can get deals others cannot. Engage customers by providing them with something exclusive. You can put up a contest for social media friends. If this doesn?t appeal to you, offer an exclusive item or savings for your social media fans instead. You can also make announcements only on your social media sites.

Respond to every comment that is posted to your Facebook page. This applies to negative comments and positive comments alike. When people see that they?re thoughts are being heard, they tend to have greater trust in your business. You never want your customers to feel as if they?re being ignored, so it?s important that you respond to people promptly.

Online contests or giveaways will generate more leads to your website. Use discounts or free merchandise as prizes for all winners. You customer base will enjoy the possibility of winning a prize and the extra exposure for your business is a valuable plus.

Create new blog entries regularly and constantly. When you have new information and your visitors are expecting new content, they will often come by to see what you have up. This can be seen in people?s willingness to subscribe to newspapers and periodicals. Ensure that you are constantly asking people to return to your profile.

Before you choose a company to assist you in your social media marketing campaign, be sure that they openly use two-way. That will help you remain confident that they will respond to your concerns promptly and courteously. Check their pages of social media and make sure they have enough respect for their clients to answer their pages.

Make sure that your content is not too political or personal in scope, so that people who follow you on social media are not turned off. You want your customer to feel connected to you through your voice and personality, but you also want them to feel comfortable doing business with you professionally. Use a tone that is conversational, but do keep your focus to your niche.

You can use YouTube as an effective tool in marketing your products and services. One way to get the most out of YouTube is to video blog about your different products and what goes on behind the scenes at your business. Of course, YouTube doesn?t have to be the only home for your vids. You can post them in multiple locations, including your own site and on other viral sites.

Include a visual presence when you make a blog post to show off to your readers. Visitors do not want to just look at text with no graphics. You should put up some videos, graphics, data, etc, so that your visitors do not get bored. You do want to keep it under control and not overwhelm the text, but have fun.

As you are aware, millions of people utilize social media websites every day. These people create content that is quickly shared with others, which causes rapidly-spreading information to be passed through the Internet. Companies can take advantage of this by having people talk about them. You can spread the word about your business with great ease by simply following the tips presented

U.S. says best protection for religious dignity is free speech

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States told a UN human rights body on Monday it considered freedom of religion inseparable from free expression, countering calls from many Islamic countries for a treaty outlawing blasphemy.

After two weeks of protests around the Muslim world over an online film mocking the Prophet Mohammed, Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe told the UN Human Rights Council that religious dignity is best protected where there is free speech.

"The inseparable freedoms of expression and religion are important not for abstract reasons," she told the Geneva body in an unscheduled intervention as world leaders arrived in New York for a General Assembly where some were expected to call for action against blasphemy.

Donahoe said that when the two freedoms were allowed to flourish, "we see religious harmony, economic prosperity, societal innovation and progress, and citizens who feel their dignity is respected."

"When these freedoms are restricted, we see violence, poverty, stagnation and feelings of frustration and even humiliation," she said.

Last week, the 56-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation signaled it wanted an international ban on blasphemy, echoing calls from many Islamic clerics and some government leaders adter the film, made with private money in the United States, sparked widespread anti-Western protests.

Pakistan, which represents the OIC in the Human Rights Council, has a blasphemy law that Christians and Hindus say is sometimes used to persecute them. It has been seeking a U.N.-sanctioned ban on "defamation of religion" since the mid 1990s.

    PAST RESOLUTIONS

The 47-member council, dominated by developing states, has passed non-binding resolutions against defamation of religion for over a decade. Similar ones were endorsed in the U.N. General Assembly.

European countries, the United States and several Latin American nations in the council opposed the resolutions, arguing that while individual people have human rights, religions do not, and that existing U.N. pacts - if enforced - were sufficient to curb incitement to hatred and violence.

They also say there can be no global definition of blasphemy.

A diplomatic offensive headed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton led the OIC last year to abandon its effort for binding commitments and to settle for a resolution aimed at fighting intolerance while maintaining free speech.

Donahoe said on Monday that that resolution was sufficient and, if properly enforced, would bring "harmony, peace, prosperity and dignity to our citizens and our societies."

However, given the OIC statements posted on its website, Western diplomats now predict a renewed push, and some said they expected a statement from the OIC in the rights body on Tuesday.

In one response to the film furore, the European Union's foreign affairs chief, Catherine Ashton, signed a statement with the OIC, the Arab League and the African Union pledging "to work for an international consensus on tolerance and full respect for religion."

It's not a diet for everyone, but it seems to have worked.

In 2011, Jackman confessed that his wife is "always upset with me if I'm in really good shape," joking he shouldn't outshine her.

"The Wolverine" is scheduled for a July 2013 release. It will be the sixth "X Men" film and a sequel to 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," also starring Jackman.
