Volcanic aerosols, not pollutants, tamped down recent Earth warming

Mar. 1, 2013 ? A team led by the University of Colorado Boulder looking for clues about why Earth did not warm as much as scientists expected between 2000 and 2010 now thinks the culprits are hiding in plain sight -- dozens of volcanoes spewing sulfur dioxide.

The study results essentially exonerate Asia, including India and China, two countries that are estimated to have increased their industrial sulfur dioxide emissions by about 60 percent from 2000 to 2010 through coal burning, said lead study author Ryan Neely, who led the research as part of his CU-Boulder doctoral thesis. Small amounts of sulfur dioxide emissions from Earth's surface eventually rise 12 to 20 miles into the stratospheric aerosol layer of the atmosphere, where chemical reactions create sulfuric acid and water particles that reflect sunlight back to space, cooling the planet.

Neely said previous observations suggest that increases in stratospheric aerosols since 2000 have counterbalanced as much as 25 percent of the warming scientists blame on human greenhouse gas emissions. "This new study indicates it is emissions from small to moderate volcanoes that have been slowing the warming of the planet," said Neely, a researcher at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, a joint venture of CU-Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A paper on the subject was published online in Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union. Co-authors include Professors Brian Toon and Jeffrey Thayer from CU-Boulder; Susan Solomon, a former NOAA scientist now at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Jean Paul Vernier from NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.; Catherine Alvarez, Karen Rosenlof and John Daniel from NOAA; and Jason English, Michael Mills and Charles Bardeen from the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder.

The new project was undertaken in part to resolve conflicting results of two recent studies on the origins of the sulfur dioxide in the stratosphere, including a 2009 study led by the late David Hoffman of NOAA indicating aerosol increases in the stratosphere may have come from rising emissions of sulfur dioxide from India and China. In contrast, a 2011 study led by Vernier -- who also provided essential observation data for the new GRL study -- showed moderate volcanic eruptions play a role in increasing particulates in the stratosphere, Neely said.

The new GRL study also builds on a 2011 study led by Solomon showing stratospheric aerosols offset about a quarter of the greenhouse effect warming on Earth during the past decade, said Neely, also a postdoctoral fellow in NCAR's Advanced Study Program.

The new study relies on long-term measurements of changes in the stratospheric aerosol layer's "optical depth," which is a measure of transparency, said Neely. Since 2000, the optical depth in the stratospheric aerosol layer has increased by about 4 to 7 percent, meaning it is slightly more opaque now than in previous years.

"The biggest implication here is that scientists need to pay more attention to small and moderate volcanic eruptions when trying to understand changes in Earth's climate," said Toon of CU-Boulder's Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. "But overall these eruptions are not going to counter the greenhouse effect. Emissions of volcanic gases go up and down, helping to cool or heat the planet, while greenhouse gas emissions from human activity just continue to go up."

The key to the new results was the combined use of two sophisticated computer models, including the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, or WACCM, Version 3, developed by NCAR and which is widely used around the world by scientists to study the atmosphere. The team coupled WACCM with a second model, the Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmosphere, or CARMA, which allows researchers to calculate properties of specific aerosols and which has been under development by a team led by Toon for the past several decades.

Neely said the team used the Janus supercomputer on campus to conduct seven computer "runs," each simulating 10 years of atmospheric activity tied to both coal-burning activities in Asia and to emissions by volcanoes around the world. Each run took about a week of computer time using 192 processors, allowing the team to separate coal-burning pollution in Asia from aerosol contributions from moderate, global volcanic eruptions. The project would have taken a single computer processor roughly 25 years to complete, said Neely.

The scientists said 10-year climate data sets like the one gathered for the new study are not long enough to determine climate change trends. "This paper addresses a question of immediate relevance to our understanding of the human impact on climate," said Neely. "It should interest those examining the sources of decadal climate variability, the global impact of local pollution and the role of volcanoes."

While small and moderate volcanoes mask some of the human-caused warming of the planet, larger volcanoes can have a much bigger effect, said Toon. When Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted in 1991, it emitted millions of tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere that cooled Earth slightly for the next several years.

The research for the new study was funded in part through a NOAA/ ESRL-CIRES Graduate Fellowship to Neely. The National Science Foundation and NASA also provided funding for the research project. The Janus supercomputer is supported by NSF and CU-Boulder and is a joint effort of CU-Boulder, CU Denver and NCAR.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Ending his unexpected round of basketball diplomacy in North Korea on Friday, ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman called leader Kim Jong Un an "awesome guy" and said his father and grandfather were "great leaders."

Rodman, the highest-profile American to meet Kim since he inherited power from father Kim Jong Il in 2011, watched a basketball game with the authoritarian leader Thursday and later drank and dined on sushi with him.

At Pyongyang's Sunan airport on his way to Beijing, Rodman said it was "amazing" that the North Koreans were "so honest." He added that Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, North Korea's founder, "were great leaders."

"He's proud, his country likes him ? not like him, love him, love him," Rodman said of Kim Jong Un. "Guess what, I love him. The guy's really awesome."

At Beijing's airport, Rodman pushed past waiting journalists without saying anything.

Rodman's visit to North Korea began Monday and took place amid tension between Washington and Pyongyang. North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test just two weeks ago, making clear the provocative act was a warning to the United States to drop what it considers a "hostile" policy toward the North.

Rodman traveled to Pyongyang with three members of the professional Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, VICE correspondent Ryan Duffy and a production crew to shoot an episode on North Korea for a new weekly HBO series.

Kim, a diehard basketball fan, told the former Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls star that he hoped the visit would break the ice between the United States and North Korea, said Shane Smith, founder of the New York-based VICE media company.

Dressed in a blue Mao suit, Kim laughed and slapped his hands on a table during the game at Jong Ju Yong Gymnasium as he sat nearly knee to knee with Rodman. Rodman, the man who once turned up in a wedding dress to promote his autobiography, wore a dark suit and dark sunglasses, but still had on his nose rings and other piercings. A can of Coca-Cola sat on the table before him in photos shared with AP by VICE.

Smith, after speaking to the VICE crew in Pyongyang, said Kim and Rodman "bonded" and chatted in English, though Kim primarily spoke in Korean through a translator.

Thursday's game ended in a 110-110 tie, with two Americans playing on each team alongside North Koreans. After the game, Rodman addressed Kim in a speech before a crowd of tens of thousands of North Koreans and told him, "You have a friend for life," VICE spokesman Alex Detrick told AP.

At an "epic feast" later, the leader plied the group with food and drinks and round after round of toasts were made, Duffy said in an email to AP.

Duffy said he invited Kim to visit the United States, a proposal met with hearty laughter from the North Korean leader.

Kim said he hoped sports exchanges would promote "mutual understanding between the people of the two countries," the official Korean Central News Agency said.

North Korea and the U.S. fought on opposite sides of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953. The foes never signed a peace treaty, and do not have diplomatic relations.

Rodman's trip is the second attention-grabbing American visit this year to North Korea. Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made a four-day trip in January to Pyongyang, but did not meet the North Korean leader.

The Obama administration had frowned on the trip by Schmidt, who was accompanied by former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, but has avoided criticizing Rodman's outing, saying it's about sports.

How To Bring Linux Into Mainstream Gaming - Features - www ...

An open operating system that you don't have to buy sounds like a win-win for gamers and developers, but many obstacles prevent Linux from moving past its current niche status. Here's what needs to happen to break Windows' dominance of computer gaming.

As awesome as a Linux-driven future sounds, we gamers can do little to bring it about. Two things bind computer gaming to the Microsoft platform so tightly that the Linux and Mac ecosystems are still only sideshows at best: driver support from Nvidia and AMD, and low-level application programming interface (API) software like DirectX. Understanding these challenges, even if you're unable to address them yourself, is the first step to advocacy.

Graphics drivers aren't just a way for Nvidia to annoy you by making you download another couple hundred MB every few months. Think of them as the bridge between all that fancy custom graphics hardware and your operating system. These hideously complex pieces of software translate what the computer is telling it about what it should display onscreen into commands that can be taken advantage of not only the GPU, but the advanced shaders and other bits of silicon that make up a graphics card. A modern CPU is an unbelievably powerful computational device, but it and its supporting architecture on the motherboard are general-purpose silicon that accomplish tasks by brute force. A modern graphics card, on the other hand, has highly specialized subsystems that can do very specific tasks extremely quickly. The driver is the software that makes those specially designed bits work, and how well the driver itself is written has huge effects on stability and raw performance.

Because Windows is so ubiquitous, both Nvidia and AMD expend massive resources in making their drivers as efficient and stable as possible. Linux drivers, on the other hand, are a much lower priority and in some cases are even hacked together by the open-source community (which brings its own set of problems). Both Linux and Mac use the OpenGL API framework, and so drivers written for both can share large portions of their code ? but they're far from 100-percent compatible. This presents a chicken-and-egg problem: Few people game on Linux because there aren't many games, and companies don't bother making competitive drivers because the market isn't large enough to make it profitable.

This all sounds like doom and gloom, but good news exists in all this. The traditional solution to this kind of chicken-and-egg problem is for someone to break the cycle with a large, one-time expenditure that gets things moving in the right direction. In this case, the obvious target would be for a company to bite the bullet and invest a big chunk of money into better driver/API support on Linux, making it easier for developers to port their games over. Enter Valve and its SteamBox initiative. Making a gaming-ready computer available at the low cost Valve seems to be aiming for is a lot easier when every box doesn't include a $100 Microsoft tax. Valve cracking the code to either make WINE (a Windows emulator for Linux) or native Linux support approach Windows in stability and performance would be exactly the kind of kick in the pants Linux gaming needs to get off the ground, especially coupled with a growing install base thanks to low-cost gaming computers like the SteamBox.

Much of this analysis has focused on Valve, because frankly the company is exactly the kind of technically talented, cash-rich entity that might see pushing Linux infrastructure as a good investment. Plenty of other developers and retail services would no doubt love to expand their businesses onto Linux, especially in the face of Microsoft's steps with Windows 8 to lock down its ecosystem into something more akin to the walled garden of Apple's iOS, but none fit the bill quite so perfectly as Valve.

So what can you do? Let your favorite developers know that you'd love to see their games on Linux. Making your voice heard does make a difference. Even if they don't respond, every developer I've talked to about it insists that they read all their fan feedback. Give Linux a shot yourself???after all, it's free, and dual-booting Windows and Linux is easy to set up. Popular distributions like Ubuntu are much more user-friendly than they were years ago, and free software is out there to handle most common computing tasks. Grab Linux clients for any games you already own, and connect to Steam and other services with Linux. Seeing their number of Linux users inflate is one of the most powerful arguments to sway developers into pushing for greater Linux representation.

This may seem like a whole lot of pontificating about a solution in search of a problem, but I absolutely believe that even though I like Windows 7 and other Microsoft products, an open-source platform guarantees a much brighter future for computer gaming. Maybe Microsoft has no plans to lock down Windows 8 further than it already is, but I'd feel better if my favorite hobby was immune to being held hostage by any single company. Executives retire or are replaced, businesses evolve, and priorities change. I'd rather not tempt fate.

Researchers from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich identify a novel signal transduction pathway, which activates the parkin gene and prevents stress-induced neuronal cell death.

Parkinson's disease is the most common movement disorder and the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. It is characterized by the loss of dopamin-producing neurons in the substantia nigra, a region in the midbrain, which is implicated in motor control. The typical clinical signs include resting tremor, muscle rigidity, slowness of movements, and impaired balance. In about 10% of cases Parkinson's disease is caused by mutations in specific genes, one of them is called parkin.

"Parkinson-associated genes are particularly interesting for researchers, since insights into the function and dysfunction of these genes allow conclusions on the pathomechanisms underlying Parkinson's disease", says Dr. Konstanze Winklhofer of the Adolf Butenandt Institute at the LMU Munich, who is also affiliated with the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). Winklhofer and her colleagues had previously observed that parkin can protect neurons from cell death under various stress conditions. In the course of this project, it became obvious that a loss of parkin function impairs the activity and integrity of mitochondria, which serve as the cellular power stations. In their latest publication, Winklhofer and coworkers uncovered the molecular mechanism that accounts for parkin's neuroprotective action.

"We discovered a novel signaling pathway that is responsible for the neuroprotective activity of parkin," Winklhofer reports. The central player of this pathway is a protein called NEMO, which is activated by the enzymatic attachment of a linear chain of ubiquitin molecules. This reaction is promoted by parkin, thereby enabling NEMO to activate a signal cascade, which ultimately leads to the expression of a specific set of genes. Winklhofer's team identified one essential gene targeted by this pathway, which turned out to code for the mitochondrial protein OPA1. OPA1 maintains the integrity of mitochondria and prevents stress-induced neuronal cell death.

"These findings suggest that strategies to activate this signal pathway or to enhance the synthesis of OPA1 in cells exposed to stress could be of therapeutic benefit," Winklhofer points out.

The newly identified signal pathway may also be relevant in the context of other neurological conditions that are characterized by the loss of specific neurons. Konstanze Winklhofer and her group are already engaged in further projects designed to determine whether other molecules regulated by this pathway might provide targets for therapeutic interventions.

March is make-or-break month for Colorado drought

DENVER (AP) -- March is a make-or-break month for relieving drought conditions in Colorado.

State climatologist Nolan Doesken says a series of snow storms or one monster blizzard, like the one in 2003, would go a long way to improve conditions along the Front Range and Eastern Plains.

The month is traditionally a wet one. But last year the state dried out during an extremely dry and warm March, which also marked the start of a deadly wildfire season.

April and May often bring rain and snow too. Doesken says March precipitation is key because the normally cooler weather helps moisture penetrate the ground and slows evaporation.

Doesken said this week's series of storms benefited any areas that got at least 7 inches of snow, the equivalent of about a ? inch of water.
