March is make-or-break month for Colorado drought

DENVER (AP) -- March is a make-or-break month for relieving drought conditions in Colorado.

State climatologist Nolan Doesken says a series of snow storms or one monster blizzard, like the one in 2003, would go a long way to improve conditions along the Front Range and Eastern Plains.

The month is traditionally a wet one. But last year the state dried out during an extremely dry and warm March, which also marked the start of a deadly wildfire season.

April and May often bring rain and snow too. Doesken says March precipitation is key because the normally cooler weather helps moisture penetrate the ground and slows evaporation.

Doesken said this week's series of storms benefited any areas that got at least 7 inches of snow, the equivalent of about a ? inch of water.

Benedict begins quiet final day as pope

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict slips quietly from the world stage on Thursday after a private last goodbye to his cardinals and a short flight to a country palace to enter the final phase of his life "hidden from the world".

In keeping with his shy and modest ways, there will be no public ceremony to mark the first papal resignation in six centuries and no solemn declaration ending his nearly eight-year reign at the head of the world's largest church.

His last public appearance will be a short greeting to residents and well-wishers at Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence south of Rome, in the late afternoon after his 15-minute helicopter hop from the Vatican.

When the resignation becomes official at 8 p.m. Rome time (02.00 p.m. EST), Benedict will be relaxing inside the 17th century palace. Swiss Guards on duty at the main gate to indicate the pope's presence within will simply quit their posts and return to Rome to await their next pontiff.

Avoiding any special ceremony, Benedict used his weekly general audience on Wednesday to bid an emotional farewell to more than 150,000 people who packed St Peter's Square to cheer for him and wave signs of support.

With a slight smile, his often stern-looking face seemed content and relaxed as he acknowledged the loud applause from the crowd.

"Thank you, I am very moved," he said in Italian. His unusually personal remarks included an admission that "there were moments ... when the seas were rough and the wind blew against us and it seemed that the Lord was sleeping".

CARDINALS PREPARE THE FUTURE

Once the chair of St Peter is vacant, cardinals who have assembled from around the world for Benedict's farewell will begin planning the closed-door conclave that will elect his successor.

One of the first questions facing these "princes of the Church" is when the 115 cardinal electors should enter the Sistine Chapel for the voting. They will hold a first meeting on Friday but a decision may not come until next week.

The Vatican seems to be aiming for an election by mid-March so the new pope can be installed in office before Palm Sunday on March 24 and lead the Holy Week services that culminate in Easter on the following Sunday.

In the meantime, the cardinals will hold daily consultations at the Vatican at which they discuss issues facing the Church, get to know each other better and size up potential candidates for the 2,000-year-old post of pope.

There are no official candidates, no open campaigning and no clear front runner for the job. Cardinals tipped as favorites by Vatican watchers include Brazil's Odilo Scherer, Canadian Marc Ouellet, Ghanaian Peter Turkson, Italy's Angelo Scola and Timothy Dolan of the United States.

BENEDICT'S PLANS

Benedict, a bookish man who did not seek the papacy and did not enjoy the global glare it brought, proved to be an energetic teacher of Catholic doctrine but a poor manager of the Curia, the Vatican bureaucracy that became mired in scandal during his reign.

He leaves his successor a top secret report on rivalries and scandals within the Curia, prompted by leaks of internal files last year that documented the problems hidden behind the Vatican's thick walls and the Church's traditional secrecy.

After about two months at Castel Gandolfo, Benedict plans to move into a refurbished convent in the Vatican Gardens, where he will live out his life in prayer and study, "hidden to the world", as he put it.

Having both a retired and a serving pope at the same time proved such a novelty that the Vatican took nearly two weeks to decide his title and form of clerical dress.

He will be known as the "pope emeritus," wear a simple white cassock rather than his white papal clothes and retire his famous red "shoes of the fisherman," a symbol of the blood of the early Christian martyrs, for more pedestrian brown ones.

Sitting less and moving about more could be more important than vigorous exercise to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes

Feb. 27, 2013 ? New research led at the University of Leicester reveals that individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes would benefit from being told to sit less and move around more often- rather than simply exercising regularly. The experts suggest that reducing sitting time by 90 minutes in total per day could lead to important health benefits.

Currently, at risk patients are advised to engage in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for at least 150 mins per week. But the new study published in Diabetologia (The journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) suggests that patents should in fact be advised to reduce their sedentary time (time spent moving very little or not at all, for example sitting or lying down). The research was led by Joseph Henson and colleagues from the Diabetes Research Unit, University of Leicester and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester Loughborough Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity Biomedical Research Unit (BRU), UK.

Henson and colleagues analysed patients from two studies: 153 from project STAND (Sedentary Time and Diabetes study, mean age 33 years, 29% men) and the Walking Away from Diabetes study (mean age 64 years, 65% men). The team examined the extent to which sedentary time, breaks in sedentary time, MVPA and total physical activity were independently associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in a population with known risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Accelerometers were used to assess sedentary time, MVPA, and total physical activity. Breaks in sedentary time were defined as a transition from a sedentary to an active state.

The researchers found that for these patients with known risk factors for type 2 diabetes recruited from primary care, sedentary time was detrimentally associated with 2 h glucose, triacylglycerol and HDL-cholesterol, independent of measured confounders. These results remained significant after further adjustment for MVPA and adiposity.

Furthermore, the findings were consistent across groups with diverse age ranges, providing evidence that the negative consequences of excess sedentary time exist across young to old adults. Interestingly, sedentary time was shown to have stronger associations with several important cardiometabolic markers (2 h glucose, triacylglycerol and HDL-cholesterol) compared with total physical activity and MVPA, after adjustment for each other and other important confounders.

"These studies provide preliminary evidence that sedentary behaviour may be a more effective way to target the prevention of type 2 diabetes, rather than just solely focusing on MVPA. Moreover, sedentary time occupies large portions of the day, unlike MVPA," says Henson.

He adds that the new data raise questions regarding the possible prescription of optimal daily movement for health. He concludes: "Diabetes and cardiovascular prevention programmes concentrating solely on MVPA may overlook an area that is of fundamental importance to cardiometabolic health. Along with messages related to accumulating at least 150 min/week of MVPA, which form the cornerstone of diabetes prevention programmes, such interventions may be more effective still if individuals are further encouraged to simply sit less and move more, regardless of the intensity level."

He concludes: "This approach requires a paradigm shift, so that individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes think about the balance of sedentary behaviour and physical activity throughout the day."

Hanwood Holdings are pleased to announce their new movie investment offering - Henry 5

Set 50 years into the future, an over populated Great Britain is totally reliant on France for its electricity. With spiralling costs and with Britain close to bankruptcy this is no longer a tenable position. Only one path is left open... war.

(PRWEB UK) 27 February 2013

Henry 5 is a story of political intrigue and personal ambition that not only reminds us of the Bush / Blair years and the invasion of Iraq, but also sentiments that Shakespeare expressed 400 years ago are as relevant today as they were then, and will be in the future.

Society has not yet descended into a post-apocalyptic maelstrom but the nation is broke and morally in terminal decline. With echoes of Blair and Bush?s invasion of Iraq (which many believe was to do with oil), the King (Henry) decides with his cabinet to ?cook up? a war dossier so that he can ?legally? invade Britain?s closest neighbour - France.

France provides the UK with its electricity and still has wide-open spaces with 100 hectares more land per 1 hectare of England?s soil. Britain is now over populated and breaking at the seams so a fast cabinet decision is pushed through parliament - WAR. Shakespeare provides us with the richness of language to convey this apocalyptic vision perfectly.

England?s only hope of survival is to carry out two tasks in the war manifesto:

1) Take France and control the electricity, gas and coal, which the UK can no longer meet their price demands for.

2) Contain all of the non-British (and the French think non French) within the strict borders of a renamed United Kingdom.

This coup can only be sealed by Henry if he becomes victorious and marries Katherine the daughter of the King and Queen of France. A war cabinet is assembled and the French are denounced as war profiteers ? a decision is passed and war is declared?.

With a planned all-star cast including Ray Winstone (The Sweeny, Snow White & The Huntsman, The Departed, Sweeny Todd), Sir Michael Caine (The Dark Night Rises, Inception, Harry Brown, Batman, The Italian Job), Sir Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, The Kings Speech, My Week With Marilyn), Vinnie Jones (Snatch, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, X-Men, Gone in Sixty Seconds), Gerard Depardue (Life of Pi, 102 Dalmations, The Man in the Iron Mask, Green Card) & Lord Richard Attenborough (Jurassic Park trilogy, The Great Escape, Hamlet).

Two rats cooperate telepathically via brain implant

Nicolelis lab / Duke University

If you're a lab rat, life is full of choices.

By Nidhi Subbaraman

Two rats ? one in North Carolina, the other in?Brazil ? worked together on a task by communicating telepathically, thanks to implants in their brain.

Electrical signals from a "leader" rat?s brain were collected, encoded and then zapped into the "follower" rat?s cortex in the form of an electrical signal. The follower rat then pressed one of two levers based on a light visible only to the leader rat.?The Duke University experiment is the first time two animals have collaborated through such an artificial link, and shows that the mammal brain can be trained to act on electrical signals from another animal.?

Miguel Nicolelis, the Duke neuroscientist who led the team from Duke and the?International Institute for Neuroscience of Natal in Brazil, believes that information transfer could extend to other senses, too. ?You could think about taste, vision ? I don?t see any problem doing this,? he told NBC News.

He says his wired rat duo show that the linking of mammalian brains is possible, but why stop at just two? "I could see a swarm of rats be informed by one rat," he says, "Most of them driving to the source based on information from another individual," a concept he calls a "Brain Net."

Nicolelis and crew published their findings in Scientific Reports Thursday.?

?I still think it's wild that he made it possible,??Ron Frostig, a neurobiologist at the University of Irvine who was not involved with the experiments told NBC News.?

This experiment is in many ways extension of brain-machine tech that has been on slow boil at the Nicolelis lab for over a decade. Earlier in February, the Nicolelis lab showed that rats could be trained to act on infrared cues. Rats, like people, can?t naturally sense infrared light ? an infrared sensor activated a implant in the rats' brains. Eventually they learned to follow that signal, approached the right hole, and received a reward.

In the latest "mind-reading" experiment, both lead and follow rats went through a series of training phases. The leader rat was trained to use a lit light bulb to choose which of two levers to press. The second rat was trained to receive and act on gentle zaps of electrical stimulation in its brain. Once the two were wired up together, the second rat received signals from the leader rat's brain indicating which lever to choose. When the follower pressed the right lever, it was rewarded with water, and the leader was rewarded as well.

The leader rat eventually figured out that the clearer he was with his ?instructions,? the better his chances of getting a double reward. Frostig pointed out that this training was crucial to the success of this series of demonstrations.?

While the link between the rats seems telepathic to casual observer, the rats don't necessarily know the other exists, Nicolelis explains. The follower rat feels a tingle in its brain and discovers that interpreting it one way rather than another leads to a reward.?Marshall Shuler???a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University who was Nicolelis? student in the late 1990s?? describes it as a "special and powerful case of conditioning." "What's unique about this is that one animal is getting information that has nothing to do with it environment," he told NBC News. ?

How about human telepathy?
The researchers are years away from testing this kind of electronic telepathy in people. Still, based on what is known about how people respond to brain stimulation and implants, Shuler?says we might be better than the rats at interpreting intracranial cues.

"I would think that humans would be able to exploit this information even more efficiently," Shuler says.?

Nicolelis says they are ?perfecting the experiment? in monkeys, training them to collaborate in a virtual game. In the past, the Nicolelis lab has trained brain-implanted?monkeys to control a cursor on a screen using only their thoughts. In another computer game, a monkey pawed at virtual discs of different simulated textures, and was trained to pick one texture over the other, demonstrating one way information about touch could be fed back into the brain.

Shuler says that this line of research isn't just about person-to-person telepathy, but may very well help computers talk back to human brains. ?We?re quite comfortable with patterns arising from our own sensory mechanisms,? he explained, ?What?s less intuitive to us is that, as experimentalists and engineers impose artificial patterns, the brain is able to render that information useful.?

Take the field of prosthetics, a zone the Nicolelis lab is at home in. Ultimately, Shuler says, the goal is to get prosthetics to send touch data back to the user. A number of labs have shown that the brain or residual nerves can move a prosthetic limb. What many of those smart body parts lack is a way of relaying sophisticated feedback back to the brain. The Nicolelis lab may well provide the answer.?
